This weekend will be the 4th Annual Toronto Island Lake Swim, a race that was one of the original members of the Global Swim Series and has quickly evolved into an open water classic in Canada. The event will boast an estimated 300 swimmers making it one of the largest open water races in Ontario. This swim has featured swimmers of all levels from beginner recreational swimmers to elite athletes including Olympians.

Situated just outside of downtown Toronto, swimmers must first take a quick ferry ride over to the Toronto Islands where on the south side of Centre Island is a pristine white sand beach that will be host to the race.

The event offers 3 distances: 1.5km, 3.8km and a 750m sprint race. The courses for all 3 races involve a loop swim starting at the Centre Island Pier and heading parallel to the shoreline towards Ward’s Island Beach before turning around and finishing back by the pier. The course is extremely well marked by buoys along the way. The water will likely be crisp and cool and the entire course is about 8-12 feet deep with a sandy bottom the whole way. There will be plenty of awards for top finishers and a live reggae band playing throughout to add to the post-race excitement.

This year’s event will have a number of celebrity open water guests including Loren King, who recently swam across Lake Ontario and founded the Great Lakes Trust, Maya Ferrell, who spent 23 hours crossing Lake Ontario at age 14 before having to be pulled just 300m from shore due to a thunderstorm and Madhu Nagaraja, an accomplished marathon swimmer who has swam solo crossings of the English Channel and Lake Ontario as well as an attempted crossing from Chile to Antarctica.

With plenty of prizes, live music, celebrity guests and a great beach to host it all on, don’t miss out on this great race!
