This weekend the Global Swim Series really gets the action going in Canada. We’ve had a few races in Canada so far this season but with some big ones still to come this weekend will really crank up the competition.
The Global Swim Series actually started as the “Canadian Open Water Swim Series” and with still a very strong Canadian presence it’s only fitting that there still ends up being a weekend action packed with Canadian races. We’ve got 3 races this weekend all in Canada scattered all over the country!
Bring on the Bay
The biggest open water swim in Ontario, the Bring on the Bay Swim has been a true classic for a number of years now with numbers swelling to an expected 600 swimmers this year.
The swim takes place just outside Canada’s capital of Ottawa. The event is a 3km point-to-point swim that starts at the Nepean Sailing Club and finishes down the river at the Britannia Yacht Club. There is plenty to see along the way and a huge escort of boats accompanying heats of swimmers down the Ottawa River on this fantastic swim. There will be some great competition at the top end as the race usually draws some fast competitors. But with such a big crowd in attendance this is a great swim for swimmers of all abilities!
Taking place at the world famous Kitsilano Beach in Vancouver, Canada this venue highlights some of the beautiful scenery that Vancouver has to offer. With both the beautiful downtown skyline and the scenic mountains as the backdrop there’s plenty to love about this great race. Kitsilano Beach is also home to Canada’s longest pool (137m long!), which is a huge attraction in its own right.
Given the beautiful backdrop and the usually mild water temperatures in English Bay, this swim is a “can’t miss” event for swimmers in the Vancouver area and beyond. There is a 750m, 1.5km, 3km and 6km distance as well as a relay event.
North Shore Challenge for Camp Trillium
The North Shore Challenge returns to the shores of Lake Erie for a 3rd straight year and is another GSS swim expecting record attendance this year. We’ve already gone into more detail in our pre-race report on this race, but the North Shore Challenge for Camp Trillium is great swim offering multiple distances including a 1km, 3.8km and a 10km. There will be plenty of prizes provided by local sponsors and appearances by many avid GSS swimmers!
