Aboutthe swim

Nestled in the stunning Bay of Islands, New Zealand’s first capital Russell will play host to this summer’s Bay of Islands Classic – the second of seven events in the New Zealand Ocean Swim Series.

For the first time in this event’s 9 year history, the 3.3km ‘I’m Going Long’ course will be in reverse, starting over at Paihia Beach and finishing over at the main event site in Russell. As a Series first, this distance will also be a twilight swim!

Russell will play host to the event, with the main event site there and the ‘Step it Up’ 1km, ‘Give it a Go’ 500m and ‘Banana Boat OceanKids’ 200m event distances taking place off Russell Beach throughout the afternoon, prior to the start of the 3.3km event.

Are your 7-12 year old kids enjoying their swimming? Why not extend their skill range and confidence in a safe and fun environment with the Banana Boat OceanKids – a 200m ocean swim. What better way to encourage your children to have fun and be safe in the ocean, than being surrounded by their peers and inspiring life guards!

Consisting of four different swim events, the Bay of Islands Classic provides an ocean swim event for all ages and abilities:

- ‘I’m Going Long’ 3.3km – a swim across the harbour from Paihia Beach to Russell
- ‘Step it Up’ 1km – taking place off Russell, an achievable distance for individuals with swimming experience
- ‘Give it a Go’ 500m – taking place off Russell, a great introduction to open water swimming
- ‘Banana Boat OceanKids’ 200m – a swim for children aged between 7-12 years old, consisting of a 200m shallow water swim along the Russell shore line, lined with Surf Life Saving NZ guards

The New Zealand Ocean Swim Series is the largest group of open water swims in New Zealand, with over 8,000 swimmers participating in these 7 popular and professionally run races. So if you are a local looking to add more points to your Global Ranking from the other GSS races in New Zealand or you are someone vacationing in New Zealand and want to add points to your other races from around the world, these are fun and inclusive races that are well worth looking up!

So get your friends and family together and enjoy a summer break in the ‘eternally sunny’ Bay of Islands with our crowd favourite ‘Bay of Islands Classic’.
