This weekend was an action packed one for the Global Swim Series.  In just over 24 hours we had 3 Canadian races take place.  On Saturday in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia the EPIC Swim took place and had yet another successful year as a part of the series.  Hundreds of miles west just north of Hamilton, Ontario a successful offroad triathlon called Mine over Matter hosted it’s first ever open water races.  Check out results in this article or under our results tab.

Mine Over Matter

Mine over Matter has existed for several years as a very successful offroad triathlon (swim, mountain bike, trail run). However upon noticing the growth of Open Water Swimming recently, race directors decided to add a separate open water race into the event. Taking place at the Kelso Conservation Area Quarry, a pristine body of water that is usually closed to the public , the venue offered a unique chance for swimmers to do a race off the beaten path even though the site was easily accessible from the GTA. The forecast of rain likely deterred some of the crowd but despite dark skies the weather held up and ended up being the only part of the weekend that wasn’t pouring rain in the Ontario area.

Despite the smaller crowd there were still some high level swimmers that showed up.  The defending series champion from last year Bill Leonard made his season debut coming in 4th overall in the 2km race (1st Non-Wetsuit).  Former World Championship Gold Medalist Greg Streppel took 1st in the 2km with a fast 25:11 followed but Bud Seawright in 26:24.

EPIC Swim

In Nova Scotia the EPIC Swim had another successful year.  While rain and bad weather affected the other 2 Canadian races this past weekend over in Lake Banook the sun was shining and a great day was had by all.  The event offered a 1km, 2km and 5km distance.  Youth really shined at this event as a number of swimmers in the 19 and under age group really excelled.  The longest race of the day ended up having a dramatic finish.  Ted MacDonald edged out Cassidy Langley by 20 seconds to take the event win.  However with MacDonald in the Male Wetsuit division and Langley in the Female Non-Wetsuit division both were able to claim a win.
