The aQuelle Midmar Mile

About

If you’re looking to take part in a truly grand open water swimming event, then the “aQuelle Midmar Mile” should be at the top of your to-do list.  The aQuelle Midmar Mile is credited as the largest open water swimming event in the world by the Guiness Book of World Records.  The event features around 16,000 swimmers of all ages and abilities, from all over the world.

The event takes place over 2 days with four events on each day.  Each event is the titular mile distance, with Day 1 being the more sociable day with family and team events.  Day 2 on the other hand breaks into age groups for men and women before closing things off with the more elite swimmers in the final 2 races.  There is a section called the 98 Mile Club where swimmers raise funds for charities and also a 186 Mile Club where swimmers raise funds for a charity and swim to the start before joining the race start of each event.  This adds up to 8 miles a day.  The race takes place in a warm, calm dam just outside of Durban.  Due to the water temperatures the race is a non-wetsuit event.

The aQuelle Midmar Mile is one of the most exciting open water races on the planet and is truly a spectacle on the grandest scale.  This is definitely a race for an open water swimmer’s bucket list!
