The Roermond City Swim has become the first Dutch race to join the Global Swim Series!

This is a new river swim that has already become a classic European city swim.  Following in the footsteps of other great historic city swim races, such as Dublin’s 98th annual “Liffey Swim”, as well as Swim Belfast.

This race has a unique ambience, based in the center of the town and in the south of the Netherlands.  The city of Maas, Roer and Swalm have a total population of 57,000 and is situated in the central Euregio Rhine-Maas-North. Both Germany and Belgium are less than 15 kilometers away.  Roermond is a very charming city with a rich cultural history that goes back aproximately 800 years, and was actually founded by the Romans.  And given the central location of the race, hundreds of “sporty” people swim to raise funds for charity.

2017 was the inaugural year of the race, and it was a big success for the hundreds of swimmers, the 8,000 spectators, as well as for the 150 volunteers that helped organising this impressive swimming event! The event was also very successful for the main charity: the Toon Hermans Huis Roermond, a house for cancer patients, survivors and their friends and relatives. Thanks to the participating swimmers a cheque was presented in the amount of EURO 50,000!  The organisation of Roermond City Swim is ambitious in its goals to rapidly increase the number of participants and every participant is expected to raise a minimum amount of 100 EURO for the charity (kids under 16 years old, 50 EURO).

This event is a special event because the swimmers get to swim in the river Roer as well in the river Maas! Both rivers are well known for their superb water quality and their extensive flora and fauna. A biosphere that we cherish!

But there is a lot more.

As well as the actual race, there is also all kinds of music, shows and entertainment to entertain the crowd and to give every swimmer a big boost of energy! After the swimming event there is an amazing after-party at the famous local “Roerkade” with a lot of pubs and restaurants. For those who want to celebrate a good swim, there are a lot of options to choose from. Roermond is also famous for its Designer Outlet Centre, a huge shopping area with hundreds of designer brand-stores.  And of course there are great hotels for every price range to complete your stay in Roermond.

One of the special effects of the swimming event is the fact that it takes place on a Saturday evening. Both start and finish are located in the Roer, right in front of numerous bars, terrasses and restaurants. The last swimmers are welcomed while the sun sets at the horizon. A spectacular view that’ll be remembered for a lifetime!

There wouldn’t be a Roermond City Swim without the volunteers in the organisation and the partners of the event. There is a lot of energy around Roermond City Swim and that’s why a lot of companies and organisations have committed themselves to the event for the long term.  With the help of these organisations in future years, this event is sure to become an unforgettable classic for both to the participants and the spectators.

Roermond City Swim has races for everyone, from 10 years old to seniors and masters. There are three distances to choose from: 500 m, 1k and 2k.

Registration for this unique swimming event will be open as of March 2018.

We hope to see you at the next Roermond City Swim!
