Peskara Swimming Marathon
The Peskara swimming Marathon is part of Serbia Open Water Cup and was first held in 2014.
The first male and female competitors win the "Johnny Weissmuller Trophy"!
So you might be wondering why the Trophy honoring Johnny Weissmuller? First of all, Weissmuller was selected by the Associated Press as the greatest swimmer of the first half of the 20th century. This was because he won 5 Olympic gold medals and 1 bronze, 52 US National Championships and set 67 world records! He was also the first man to swim 100m freestyle in under 1 minute and never lost a race as an amateur! On top of his athletic prowess, he was also a Hollywood legend mostly via his role as Tarzan. And the little known fact is that this US Olympian and Hollywood icon was actually born in the Banat area of Serbia... very close to where this race is held! As such, the race is light-heartedly called the "Tarzan Cup"!
The race is hosted by the long distance-marathon swimming club: "PESKARA" and takes place in "tropical" lake Peskara, in front of the town Zrenjanin, on the northern part of Serbia. The water is almost always a nice and comfortable temperature, about 22C, warm enough to not require a wetsuit... perfect open water swimming temperature.
The event offers 3 distances. The main race is 3 km, but there is also a 1.5 km race, as well as a special race for children, 200 meters. The kids race is free and the 3k and 1.5k are very inexpensive and so are local hostels! Cheap and cheerful! All competitors also receive food and drinks after the race and nice certificate of competition.
We hope to see you out at the first race of the season in Serbia, and first race in the Serbian Open Water Cup, to start collecting your GSS points and move your way up in the Global Rankings!
