The Breaka Burleigh Ocean Swim was held on October 15th 2017 for its 9th consecutive year on the beach of Burleigh Heads, Queensland, Australia. It is a Dash for Cash race with a total cash prize of $5,000 that the elite category is able to win. The race is open to the public and there is a 400m swim for juniors as well.
This year the race day had some of the roughest conditions that it has ever seen, waves ranging from 2-3ft in height. Although the conditions were not ideal the 2km race went off without change but the 1km and the 400m juniors swim were both cancelled due to the weather.
The overall winner on the woman’s side was Meegan Hoare with a time of 22:42.7 and the overall winner on the men’s side was Troy Balvert with a time of 21.22.9. The race had a total of 104 participants and a great amount of support staff volunteers and lifeguards, especially given the conditions.
The participants of the swim compete in hot pink singlets for better rescue visibility in the ocean. The Burleigh Heads Mowbray Park surf Lifesaving Club is the lifesaving and ocean rescue team that monitors and patrols the race as well as the beach in which the swim takes place.
The race will be set to take place for its 10th year in a row next October is only continuing to grow in size and popularity amongst open water community in Queensland.
