Easter Seals Ontario, the YMCA of Kingston and legendary marathon swimmer, Vicki Keith, have banded together to start a new race, “Swim for Kids”, on Aug 19, 2017, in her home town of Kingston, Ontario, Canada.
Vicki was inducted in the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame in 2003. The Canadian open water swimmer completed an incredible number of record swims including 51.5 km (32 miles) of butterfly in 31 hours across Lake Ontario and 23 hours 33 minutes of butterfly across the English Channel. Other marathon swims completed by Vicki included swimming across all 5 Great Lakes during the summer of 1988, the first double crossing of Lake Ontario in 1987 and a continuous swim in 1985 of 100 hours and in 1986 of 129 hours 45 minutes in a pool.
Since retiring from marathon swimming in 1991, Vicki has raised over C$1 million to help children with physical disabilities. This is a new venture to do more of that.
The “Swim For Kids” race is an open water swim opportunity for people of all ages. There are participation and place medals available, as well as close to $4000 in fundraising prizes. Top Prizes includes a Via Train trip for 2 to Halifax valued at $2000, or a Hurricane Kayak.
