Aboutthe swim

So if all these big ocean swims are not your bag and you tend to go more for a beautiful fresh-water swim… then Swim the Suck is for you! The Global Swim Series has something for everyone!

Swim the Suck is a popular 10 mile/16 km, downstream swim through the Tennessee River Gorge. It is a beautiful, protected canyon in the Cumberland Mountains located only 10 miles from Chattanooga, Tennessee.

October features both pleasant air and water temperatures, both around 70 F/ 21 C. The swim starts at the Suck Creek boat launch and participants swim 10 miles downstream and finish at Living Water Property which features astounding views of the gorge.

The race has a down home feeling, as volunteers from Outdoor Chattanooga, as well as the Race Directors family and friends all help to put on an event that welcomes swimmers and kayakers from across the country and the world with a taste of true “Southern hospitality”.

A pre-race pasta dinner and race briefing is held at Outdoor Chattanooga the night before the event, where competitors get to meet their volunteer kayakers, pilots and fellow competitors. There are lots of door prizes from all over the country brought by the participants and raffled off at dinner. The post-race meal is an open taco bar catered by the Big Table and the chefs are part of the COWS swim family. Four kegs of local craft beer from the Chattanooga Brewing Company also tend to flow quite freely after the race! Every swimmer and pilot receives a cool hand-made trophy from a local artisan, a t-shirt and a Moon Pie! The top 5 M/F finishers also receive handmade trophies, a BlueSeventy swim suit and a RockCreek gift certificate!

Since its start in 2009, this race has gone from a beautiful, quaint local race to a major, thriving race that locals continue to swim and that swimmers from around the world have made into destination race that sells out in 30 minutes!
