Aboutthe swim

Crystal clear water in amazing shades of blue, secret beaches with powder white sand, hidden lagoons surrounded by lush limestone cliffs and snorkeling sites teeming with tropical fish and other marine life, these are just some of the reasons why Palawan has been named the “Best Island in the World” by Travel + Leisure and Condé Nast for two years in a row.

Given that, it isn’t all that surprising that open water swimming is booming in the Philippines. Attendance has doubled for each of the first 3 years. While a lot of the swimmers are locals, more and more swimmers are making this race into an unbelievable family adventure get away!

The Swimjunkie Challenge: El Nido offers you the choice of a 4km or 8km swim in the warm (non-wetsuit!), turquoise waters of El Nido assisted by the Philippine Coast Guard and over 150 volunteers to ensure that you have an incredible and safe race experience. To guarantee that your pre and post race experience is just as unforgettable, the race venue is at the Lio Estate, the island’s first tourism destination designed for ecological sustainability. The estate has been master planned to offer guests a full nature resort experience with their 4.5km long beach, forest paths, boutique hotels, retail shops, restaurants and a range of beach activities while being guided by principles of sustainability to protect the natural beauty of the area.

The race start and finish is on Lio Beach. The race course is shaped like a dolphin’s fin, curving out and back and stopping at the turn around point a few hundred meters away at the Lio Beach Club. Swimmers retrace the fin and return to the start point to complete 4km. The 8km swimmers head back for a second “loop”. Lio Estate is also the perfect jump off point to for you to explore so much of what Palawan has to offer. So, when booking your flights, we strongly encourage you to stay an extra day or two or three to take in all of what El Nido has to offer.
