The Crana Swim Series is a set of 3 races in Ireland over three weekends starting last weekend! This is the 3rd year for the series and we are very excited to announce that the full series is now part of the Global Swim Series family. The first race was “Lisfannon to Ludden”, last weekend… and the two latest races to join the GSS are: “Ned’s Point to Ludden” (May 25) and the “Ludden Swim” (June 1) and we are thrilled to have them!

Swimmers looking to add points to their total don’t need to wait long because the next Crana swim from Ned’s Point to Ludden is next weekend, on May 25th. The final swim in the series is the following weekend, on June 1st, and is a 2 km swim at Ludden.

The races take place in the picturesque Lough Swilly, near Buncrana. Although beautiful, these are ocean swims which adds an extra layer of fun for swimmers who have to contend with tides, potential wildlife and saltwater. Nestled between Inishowen Peninsula and the Fanad Peninsula in County Donegal, Lough Swilly is a glacial fjord (sea inlet) and one of three in Ireland.

Ned’s Point to Ludden Swim

Next weekend, at the 2nd swim of the series, swimmers will compete in a 2.5 km swim from Ned’s Point to Ludden. Swimmers will start in the water near the RNLI slipway. Swimming towards Buncrana, swimmers must first look out for the shallow water and rocks. Then, after passing the Buncrana pier, swimmers head back towards shore looking for buoy 2. From here, swimmers race to the finish swimming parallel to the shore.

Ludden Swim

The final swim of the series is another challenger, the 2 km Ludden to Ludden swim. Navigating the shallow waters of Ludden, swimmers head south towards the rocks. Looking for the Lisfannon Golf Course, swimmers turn around at buoy 1 and head back aiming for buoy 2 to finish off the race and the series.

Charitable Cause

With these events, swimmers aren’t just getting a chance to get in three great races early in the season, they also have the chance to raise funds for a great cause. The Crana Series is in support of the Lough Swilly Lifeboat Station. This is the only station in all of Ireland to run two lifeboats. One is for inshore operations and one is for all-weather. Crews and lifeguards with the RNLI have saved over 142,200 lives since 1824 making this a very worthwhile cause to support. For more information about the RNLI, see their website here. The Crana Series has raised over 10,000 Euro for the RNLI and can continue to do so with your support!
